A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
