Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions in their relations after American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.
"He operates narcotics facilities and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.
Escalating Tensions coupled with Claims
Talking to the press on Sunday, the US president suggested comparable use of force against Bogotá, asserting the nation is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the US."
While Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the trade.
A Strained Relationship
This nation for decades served as a key ally of the United States in the fight combating drug cartels and enjoyed wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have deteriorated significantly since Trump came to office.
Its illicit drug economy is largely controlled by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised following a 2016 peace deal.
Petro's Defiant Rebuttal
In response to a query if a military operation like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."
President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.
"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed online.
"If US bombs target civilians, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom many of the country admires and supports, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," the president cautioned.
From Guerrilla to Statesman
He passed some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed that he never participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in drafting the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of Bogotá before being elected the presidency.
"I swore to never again hold arms again ... but for Colombia I shall resume arms again," he affirmed.
Heightened Measures along with Widespread Condemnation
The Colombian defence minister stated that Petro's protection team was strengthened.
A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump, however, leaders spanning the political spectrum have denounced the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.
Diplomatic and Economic Strains
American authorities revoked his travel authorization following he urged US military personnel to refuse orders that violate law. In October, it placed asset freezes against the president, the first lady and a number of close collaborators.
Simultaneously the US was building up its forces in the Caribbean and striking suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted attacks on boats in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
