Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in 882 Days

19 of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been won on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his first championship for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The athlete, a former world number one, has had a difficult season, winning just one match at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in particular - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-time coach his previous coach.

Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily improved in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over challenger Moutet.

It is his first title following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface after spring of 2023.

Victory also indicates the Russian has achieved twenty-one titles at 21 different tournaments.

"It's the first time I'm at a event with my both daughters together, so to secure a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in Halle earlier this year.

The player's retrieving strategy and regular emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted some to question if his skill to perform at the highest level was over.

Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and play assertively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

He fought back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the final five points to take the lead.

Both players traded service breaks in the following set before Moutet, striving for his initial tour victory, gained dominance to create a final set.

He rescued four initial opportunities in a tight deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to 15 to secure the win.

Appropriately, he earned the title with a point at the net area, with his opponent unable to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
