Social Media Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

Nevertheless, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals administering substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Elimination

According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic material and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Operations

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored harmful material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
